Our Organic chicken are another mainstay of farm life. Our standards go beyond 'free range' and 'welfare-friendly' labels.Our organic poultry are truly free range. Although some organic systems may allow the birds access to outdoor areas there are a number of factors that make a big difference as to whether or not the birds will actually take advantage of this free ranging area.

At any one time on the farm we have about 500 chickens, these live on 26 acres of pasture with 4 chicken houses providing shelter and protection from predators. The chickens are encouraged to come out of their house during the day by having food and water outside, when you visit our shop you can see the chickens in the field opposite pecking, scratching and dust bathing. We close the chicken houses overnight to stop foxes from taking the chickens.

While intensively reared chickens live for around 42 days in cramped and stressful conditions, chickens raised to soil association standards cannot be slaughtered until they are at least 81 days old.

We have a chicken slaughter house on the farm this enables us to ensure that stress to chickens is kept to an absolute minimum.
