Our beef comes from Gambledown Farm, a small
family farm near Romsey, registered with the Soil Association. Richard
and Tamara, the farmers, keep a pedigree suckler herd of Beef Shorthorn
cattle that calve outdoors in the spring and autumn to keep us supplied
with top quality beef throughout the year.
Beef Shorthorns are one of England’s
oldest breeds of native cattle and are renowned for their well marbled
beef. They are an attractive breed, that can be white, through to a
dark red, but the most attractive are the signature red roan marked
cattle. They are good natured beasts and are easy to work with which
adds to the tenderness of the beef because of the lack of stress. The
cattle at Gambledown are grown slowly on clover rich pastures at low
stocking rates. Grass fed beef has been shown to contain less saturated
fat and more omega 3 fatty acids than corn fed beef making our beef
healthier for you and your family. The beef is well marbled and it is
this intra muscular fat that gives our beef its fantastic flavour. Unlike
beef you buy from the supermarkets our beef is hung for a minimum of
two weeks, which ensures tenderness and flavour.
Gambledown Farm share with us a
commitment to the highest welfare standards for their stock which are
raised as naturally as possible with the maximum care for their well
being and the environment they live in. Expertly cut by our Master Butcher,
we think you’ll taste the difference!
