Welcome to Swiss Valais Sheep, home of the Warborne Flock of pedigree Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep - a 15th Century mountain longwool breed from the Upper Valais canton in Switzerland.

They are not only named after where they have evolved (which is the custom) but also their distinctive facial markings; the black nose continues uninterrupted over the whole face, and their ears are black too. They have short black boots, black knee pads and hocks, and rams must have black testicles. They have distinctive helical (spiral shaped) horns and the breed is characterised as having a “harmonious, robust and large framed physique”.

By nature they are biddable and even tempered. They naturally seek human contact and approval, and to this extent are more like dogs than sheep! They can be a bit lazy though, but this inertia is a welcome contrast to most mountain breeds, which will jump off a cliff – en masse – at the sound of “boo!”

We have a limited number of our 2017 born rams for sale. They are all fully certified and registered as Pedigree Swiss Valais with pure Swiss bloodlines.

They certainly are all striking beasts; fine specimens of their breed and all have terrific growth rates, each weighing in at over 60kg at 6 months old.

2017 born stock have their names beginning with the letter “E”, and 2018 therefore F; suggestions welcome!

Though we have been breeding sheep at Warborne for generations, we don’t show them so they have not been whizzed, mixed and beautified – they are wearing their working clothes!

The Unbelievably Cute Blacknose Sheep of Valais - Oddity Central

World's Cutest Sheep - BBC

Adam And The Alps. This week Adam Henson is in Switzerland witnessing a very special tradition. High up in the Aletsch Alps in Valais more than 1,000 sheep are brought down off the mountainside every year. The homecoming of the sheep happens on the last weekend in August and the flock travel several miles across some difficult terrain. Many generations of farmers have managed to live here thanks to the hardy black-nosed sheep that can cope with life in the Alps -- but how will Adam get on? Copyright BBC

Eureka! follows me around the field like I am his mother, so I have to keep stopping and giving him some reassurance of what a good boy he is, and eventually he trots off to join his buddies. As with any of the Swiss Valais, it helps if they get a few photos taken!
